In an open letter, Past RI Director Lynmar Brock Jr., general chairman of the RI Afghan Refugee Relief Effort Committee, thanked Rotarians and friends for US$1.8 million in contributions that made the Rotary initiative to assist tens of thousands who fled war and deprivation such a success.
"Through your kindness, thousands of innocent victims have been given a renewed sense of hope for the future, with the knowledge that there are those who care," Brock told contributors.
Working with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Pakistani government, the relief committee "adopted" a refugee camp in the region of Baluchistan and one in the North-West Frontier Province with a combined total of some 48,000 refugees. RI supplied the refugees with clothing, shoes, bedding, and kerosene lamps.
Supporters of the relief effort were stunned by news of the death of Tariq Akhtar Allawala, co-chair of the RI Afghan Refugee Relief Effort Committee, on 20 June at the hands of unidentified intruders at his business office in Karachi, Pakistan. He was chief executive of Taro International and a director of Union Bank Ltd.
A member of the Rotary Club of Karachi Karsaz since 1981, Allawala had served RI as a district governor, membership zone coordinator, and member of the 2002 Barcelona Convention Task Force, the Asian Affairs Committee, and the Ad Hoc Committee for the Development of Rotary in Muslim Areas. As co-chair of the Afghan Refugee Relief Effort Committee, Allawala ably used the resources, goodwill, and contacts he accumulated as a Rotarian and business executive.
