Deepa
Dr. Deepa Ollapally,
sponsored by District 7450 (Pennsylvania, USA), shared her expertise in
American foreign policy and international politics with students at
Bangalore University (District 3190) in India. She extended her
activities beyond the classroom, becoming involved in a nonprofit
educational organization to promote greater dialogue among schools,
parents, and the community in creative ways, and collaborating with her
host Rotarians in various community projects. Their efforts to establish
a hospice in conjunction with the Indian Cancer Society inspired her, in
turn, to initiate a project to provide better housing materials to
squatters living near the Bangalore train station. After returning to
the USA, Ollapally made use of her Bangalore medical contacts and served
as a liaison between her sponsor district and the Rotary Club of
Indiranagar in Bangalore on a project to provide antirabies vaccine to
the local community. |

Marian
Tabi
〞Marian
Kumasi
Kumasi
Okomfo Anokye

Marian Tabi
is a 2002-03 Rotary Grants for University Teachers recipient from
District 6920 (USA). The Rotarians who interviewed her for this grant
wrote “this is almost a ‘once in a lifetime’ candidate, with nursing
expertise in HIV education, she can make a huge contribution to Africa’s
most critical problem.” Marian lived up to their expectations. She left
for Ghana in May 2003 and taught at Kumasi Nurses Training College until
August 2003. She was assigned to teach a course on nursing research,
another one on the principals of nursing, and a course on leadership.
While in Ghana, Marian was awarded the “Certificate of Honour” by the
local Rotaract club in appreciation of her time and commitment to
service. She attended virtually all club meetings at the Rotary Club of
Kumasi East and wrote a Matching Grant proposal with this club to help
refurbish the HIV/AIDS Counseling Unit of the Kumasi Okomfo Anokye
Teaching Hospital. She came home with letters from the Rotary Club of
Kumasi, the Nurses Training College and the Kumasi hospital all praising
her for her involvement and all emphasizing how much she accomplished in
just three months! |

•
How the Rotary Grants for University Teachers program can reach its full
potential |
|
While this program is meeting its objectives, several factors limit its
potential for far greater success. These include absence of clearly
specified and well-publicized teaching needs in host countries,
recruiting difficulties in sponsor districts, and a small number of
participating sponsor districts. Clubs and districts should recognize
that recruiting applicants for Rotary Grants for University Teachers
will require a time investment in matching the resources in their
district with the needs of districts in low-income countries. Districts
interested in sponsoring University Teachers are encouraged to develop
strong communications and relationships with colleges and universities
in their area where qualified candidates may be teaching. |

•
How clubs can get involved |
|
Clubs get involved by recruiting applicants, providing orientation for
outbound teachers, encouraging club members to serve as host advisers
for visiting University Teachers, and by inviting outbound, visiting,
and returned university teachers to present club programs and
participate in club projects. |
