SELECTION
OF THE 2004-05 SCHOLARS
The
Scholarships Fund Pool for Low-Income Countries Selection Committee met
3-4 December 2003, at Rotary International World Headquarters. Chairman
Marcus P. Doyle (Sout Africa) presided over a successful meeting
including committee members David C.J. Liddiatt (England), Samem
Mashhour (Egypt), Gustavo Gross (Peru), and Steve K. Yoshida (USA). The
Rotary Foundational received 70 applications to compete for one of the
twenty 2004-05 scholarships available through the fund pool. The
committee reviewed the 2—4-05 scholarship applications and selected
twenty finalists and four reserve candidates which were then reviewed
and approved by Rotary Foundation Trustee Chairman James Lacy. The
scholars are citizens of Argentina, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Egypt, India,
Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Lesotho, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico,
Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Romania, and Russia. The scholars will
study in Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Mexico, New
Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, and the USA. All candidates and
their sponsoring districts have been notified of the selection
decisions.
SCHOLAR TO
SPEAK AT 2004 OSAKA CONVENTION

Victoria Isiramen, a 2001-2 Academic-Year Scholar sponsored by the
Rotary club of Kawo-Kaduna, Nigeria (District 9120) studied Public
Health at University College London, England (District 1130).
Victoria has been invited to speak her about experience as an
Ambassadorial Scholar at the 2004 Osaka Convention. Victoria is
scheduled to speak during Plenary session III which takes place on
25 May 2004 from 9:30-12:00 |

This
update is designed to share information about the Scholarships Fund
Pool for Low-Income Countries with the scholarship recipients, their
sponsor and host district Governors, Scholarships Subcommittee
Chairs, Rotary Foundation Chairs and Governors of those districts
that donated to the fund, Governors of all districts that submitted
candidates, and Regional Rotary Foudnation coordinators. To

FUNDING
STATUS
Seventy
districts donated US$353,432 in District Designated Funds (DDF) to the
Scholarships Fund Pool for Low-Income Countries for 2004-05
scholarships. This funding will help support a key objective of the
Ambassadorial Scholarships Program; Encouraging Rotarians worldwide to
increase the educational opportunities for scholars from low-income
countries. The following districts have generously donated DDF to
support the fourth group of scholars in 2004-05. Districts 5190,6710 and
7770 donated the most DDF worldwide with a donation of US$25,000 each.

Suada
Aslanova, a 2003-04 Academic-Year Scholar sponsored by the Rotary
clubof Baku, Azerbaijan (non-districted), is studying Management at
Nottingham Trent University in England (District 1220). Suada is the
first citizen of Azerbaijan to receive a Rotary Foundation
Ambassadorial Scholarship. Suada attended the Rotary International
Link Weekend in Leicester where she met other Rotary scholars who
have come to study in the UK. During the conference she learned
about Rotary involvement in different project, like Polio
Eradication and Water Aid Campaigns. She has also given presentation
about her native country to Rotary clubs in England (see photo at
right.). |

Sabina
Stredova, a 2003-04 Academic-Year Scholar sponsored by the Rotary
club of Prague International, the Czech Republic (District 2240), is
pursuing Arabl and Middle Eastern studies at the American University
of Beirut in Lebanon (District 2450). Sabina has given several
presentations at Rotary clubs in Lebanon. She also wrote an article
for the Rotary club of Beirut Cosmopolitan’s weekly magazine
entitled Marhaba. She newspaper, The Daily Star. Sabine has also
become an active member of Rotaract. |
