馬來西亞檳榔嶼(Penang)扶輪社的莫爾(Teddric Mohr)在出差到新加坡時戴
著扶輪領章。這個小小的動作卻成為「馬來西亞挽救生命之禮」計劃的催化劑。
Teddric Mohr of the Rotary Club of Penang, Malaysia, wore his Rotary pin on a business trip to Singapore. That simple gesture was the catalyst for the Gift of Life Malaysia program.
莫爾是現代化的心臟疾病治療機構─檳榔嶼基督復臨安息日教會醫院的行政主管。2個星期後，他透過一個慈善機構得知，高棉西里有30名兒童若不接受心臟手術便無法存活，可是卻又負擔不起。
Mohr is administrator of Penang Adventist Hospital, a state-of-the-art heart treatment facility. Two weeks earlier, he had learned through a relief agency of 30 children in Siem Reap, Cambodia, who would not survive without heart surgery, which they could not afford.
莫爾說：「我說我們打算幫忙，可是卻不知道方法。」
"I said that we were going to help, but I didn't know how," Mohr said.
在飛往新加坡的飛機上，莫爾看到走道另一邊也戴著扶輪領章的乘客：1999-2000年國際扶輪副社長葛登(Abraham I Gordon)。葛登告訴莫爾第7250地區(美國紐約州)知名的「挽救生命之禮」計劃，並介紹他與計劃主辦者聯繫。
On the plane to Singapore, Mohr looked across the aisle to find another passenger wearing a Rotary pin: 1999-2000 RI Vice President Abraham I. Gordon. Gordon told Mohr about the renowned Gift of Life program in District 7250 (New York, USA) and put him in touch with its organizers.
在播撒種子之後，靠著檳榔嶼扶輪社(第3300地區)、(布魯克林)佛拉薩諾(Verrazano)扶輪社、與第7250地區其他扶輪社的捐款，馬來西亞挽救生命之禮計劃因而誕生。扶輪基金會提撥配合款，使計劃總經費達10萬美元。馬來西亞的捐獻者接著又使這個捐款金額增加為2倍。
With the seeds planted, Gift of Life Malaysia came into being with donations from the Rotary Club of Penang (District 3300) and the Rotary Club of Verrazano (Brooklyn) and other clubs in District 7250. The Rotary Foundation matched their funds for a total project amount of US$100,000. Contributions from Malaysian donors then doubled that amount.
該計劃贊助高棉與鄰近國家50名從嬰兒到18歲年紀兒童，在檳榔嶼基督復臨安息日教會醫院接受手術。媒體的廣泛報導讓挽救生命之禮計劃獲得更多捐款，也增加對扶輪的好印象。
The project paid for operations on 50 children, infants to age 18, from Cambodia and neighboring countries, at Penang Adventist Hospital. Widespread coverage in the media generated additional contributions to Gift of Life and goodwill for Rotary.
