Indigenous Australians benefit from Foundation-aided center

During the opening ceremony for the Cultural and Life Skills Centre, Parliament member Kay Hull plants a tree symbolizing reconciliation among Australia's people, accompanied on the didgeridoo by Cec Grant of the Wiradjuri Council of Elders.

The indigenous people of Australia experience significantly lower life expectancy, poorer health, and higher infant mortality than the rest of the country's population. A project carried out by Rotarians in districts 9680 and 9700 (Australia) and 5320 (California, USA) is helping to improve life for Wiradjuri women and girls in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, by training them in health and welfare, child care, and other skills. Members of the indigenous group began taking courses in January 2002 at the Cultural and Life Skills Centre in Wagga Wagga, established in part by the project last November.

The Rotary Club of Lane Cove, New South Wales, initiated the effort, contributing expertise and funds, and the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga Kooringal provided equipment, labor, and part of the funding from District 9700. Additional funding came from District 5320 and a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant.

The project received community-wide support, with local tradespeople and companies donating materials and labor. "There was also considerable interest in the project among the local indigenous people," as John Wilson, past president of the Lane Cove club, and Past District Governor Raymond King described in a joint report. For example, a group of Aboriginal students studying land management at the local Technical and Further Education College landscaped the grounds of the center.

Local government and education officials have met at the Cultural and Life Skills Centre as part of the community's effort to raise awareness of Aboriginal people's needs. Juvenile justice officials are also exploring the possibility of providing life-skills instruction at the facility to Aboriginal first-time offenders.
