Rotary World Peace Scholar aspires to join healing process

Josephine Manuel of La Trinidad, Philippines, has grown up in two worlds. Her province of Ifugao is the site of the 2,000-year-old Banaue rice terraces, renowned by some as the Eighth Wonder of the World. Famous for its great beauty and cultural significance, the area has also been plagued by armed conflict.

During Manuel's youth, rebel soldiers demanded food and shelter from impoverished farmers in La Trinidad. Then the government retaliated by evacuating the village and bombing it.

Manuel carried these memories with her throughout high school and college years as she walked five kilometers (three miles) to her classes, enduring harsh sun, rain, and mud. "I want to become part of the healing process," said Manuel, a member of the first class of Rotary World Peace Scholars, which began studying in the 2002-03 Rotary year.

Sponsored by District 3790 (Philippines), Manuel will begin studies in international relations, peace, and conflict resolution at the Rotary Center for International Studies at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, in February. Like her fellow Rotary World Peace Scholars, she is scheduled to graduate with a master's degree in the field in 2004.

Before becoming a Rotary World Peace Scholar, Manuel worked as editor of a local government newspaper. A graduate of Benguet State University in La Trinidad with a bachelor of science in agricultural education, she has also been active as a community organizer with the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement.

"I am driven to further my career toward peace and understanding among all people," said Manuel. "If I am given the chance, my background in journalism would be a great help for needed advocacy work in the field."
