Asking the experts

For the 1,100 Rotary Foundation scholars who go abroad every year, the host counselor is an indispensable link to Rotary and the local community and an invaluable resource on the culture and customs of the host country. We asked Eugenia Echeverría (right), a counselor in Costa Rica who hosts several scholars a year:

Q: How do you assist inbound scholars?

A: As soon as I receive their names and addresses, I correspond with them, letting them know what to expect living here and giving them confidence that they have made an excellent choice. I also provide my personal information so that they can contact me at any time.

Once scholars are in the country, I meet them, tell them about the Rotary Club of Alajuela, and invite them to join us. Our club has always been very interested in learning about the scholars, so we usually schedule a brief speech at which scholars explain their experiences as goodwill ambassadors. Because of the scholars' age, we have found that introducing them to Rotaract clubs is a good way to involve them with Rotary.

As a counselor, I enjoy meeting people from around the world. I want to make sure the scholars learn that we all want the same things: peace, love, and mutual understanding. By the time the scholars leave, they should have a better understanding of what Rotary truly means so they can become Rotarians at heart.

Two years ago, the district governor asked me to become the district scholarships subcommittee chair. I accepted because in 1987 I had been a Rotary Youth Exchange student in Canada. Since I became a Rotarian in 1998, I have tried to give back to Rotary a little of what I had the opportunity to experience during that unforgettable year as an exchange student.
