Major Donors get firsthand look at Rotary Centers in UK, France

In conjunction with the 2002 RI Convention in Barcelona, Spain, four U.S. and two Indian Major Donors visited two Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution at the invitation of The Rotary Foundation and at their own expense.

Hosted by Trustee John Kenny and his wife, June, of Scotland, the group toured the Rotary Centers at the University of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, and the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris (commonly known as Sciences Po), France, as they geared up to welcome the first class of Rotary World Peace Scholars for study in 2002-03.

"They each have their own strengths," said Past District Governor Paul Rizza, a member of the Rotary Club of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania. "The University of Bradford has had a peace program for many years and is working with diverse ethnic groups in Leeds to resolve problems."

Several University of Bradford graduates have gone on to work for various United Nations agencies, and Sciences Po counts a long line of French presidents and diplomats among its distinguished alumni.

Rizza and his wife, Carolyn, contributed the Paul and Carolyn Rizza Named Rotary World Peace Scholarship, the first named scholarship in support of Rotary World Peace Scholarships. They have also visited the Rotary Center at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and they hope to visit the four other Rotary Centers within a year.

"I've always been interested in international issues," said Rizza, who taught geography at the university level for nearly three decades. He has also organized overseas academic programs and continues to participate in seminars for outbound Ambassadorial Scholars. "I've often thought that we need to do more to resolve some of these conflicts in the world and need people of goodwill to work on them.
