I would like to tell you today the story of a great journey - a journey that, and that is the best about it, is still going on and I have the feeling that it will never be ending. The next 15 minutes I will try to share some stops and stages of this trip with you.

This is not a normal voyage where you book a flight to a destination you know, where you plan your hotel or even get a great all-inclusive package - this voyage is also far from a trip where you simply can relax in the sun or go skiing in a gorgeous resort in Colorado.

這個旅行不只是我所認為的冒險，並且帶我到許多從未想像過的地方。

No, this trip was more of an adventure that I would have ever thought it to be and has brought me to places, and I am not only talking about physical places, that I never imagined to be.

When I signed up for this program, I have already had my share of adventures - having just completed a major Himalaya hike towards the Mount Everest base camp, having finished a double degree in Education and Media and Communication from both Vaxjo University in Sweden and Weingarten University in Germany, and having been traveling extensively in Asia, Africa, North America and Europe. I was also just about to start working in Brussels, as a project manager for international education programs of the European Commission.

But that day, more than 5 years ago, when I accidentally came across the notice on the Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution, I was not looking for an adventure. I was also not looking for money to go and study abroad - to be frank, I was not even looking forward to spending another 2 years at university.

But what I read that day - about this initiative - I could not resist. Simple 7 sentences where enough to make me want to embark on this journey more badly than on any other trip that I had taken before - and I went and got booked on it with no idea whatsoever about where it would take me, what would be expected of me and what this will do to my life.

那七個句子陳述了扶輪和平中心的觀點:

調解、解決衝突與和平－在有戰爭的地方

食物安全感－在有飢荒的地方

保健－在有疾病的地方

教育－在缺乏教育的地方

Those 7 sentences were the vision statement for the Rotary Peace Centers:

Mediation, Conflict Resolution and Peace - where there is war

Understanding - where there is disharmony

Food Security - where there is hunger

Health Care - where there is disease

Education - where there is illiteracy

Conservation - where there is environmental degradation, and Sustainable Economic Development - where there is poverty

這些目的是如此地簡單、正確，但又大膽、有企圖心、勇敢和具挑戰性

These goals, so simple and right, but also daring, ambitious, bold and challenging, won me over.

In my application, I stated 2 reasons for why I wanted to be on this trip:

1.   I wrote that I do not really have goal for my career, but instead that I would rather like to say "I have a vision for my future". This vision is not so much focused on a certain position or organization, but it is rather about what I would like to achieve in life that is "making a difference to people".

2. 我陳述的第二個原因，在我的觀點，〝富有〞不應純粹以金錢的觀點來衡量。它應該是以選擇的質與量來衡量。我相信每一個人不論來自於哪一個國家或哪一個社會階層，都有權利以他/她的理由評估出來想過的生活。

2.   As a second reason I stated, that in my opinion, "rich" cannot be measured from a purely monetary perspective. It is rather measured on the quality and quantity of choices. I believe that everybody non regarding from which country or which social class has a right to live a life that he or she has reason to value."

While maybe my life has changed dramatically since then, these 2 major reasons have not changed a bit. The Rotary World Peace Fellowship has not only allowed me to follow my vision but it has equipped me with the tools and techniques, the experiences and the skills, to do it more professionally, more effectively and it had made me part of a network of people that pursue similar goals.

In retrospective, there are some major stages in this voyage and I would like to take you with me along those key stops on my journey.

Stop 1: Chapel Hill, North Carolina - the Arrival

Imagine sitting in a plane to a destination you do not know and you have never been to. You are hoping very badly that the Rotary Host Counselor, who volunteered to help you during your first days, will be at the airport. You feel a wave of emotions rolling over you, excitement, nervousness, pride, anxiety, and joy at the same time. Questions are tormenting you such as: Will you be able to academically master the program; will you be able to make friends; or will they think "how in the world did this girl make it to win this scholarship".

我在二零零二年八月抵達教堂山公爵大學，在杜克大學和北卡羅來納大學的共同和平中心研究－如果你們對這兩個學校有一點瞭解，你們會對〝共同〞這個字眼出現在這句話裡感到驚訝－大學之間的合作直到那時仍局限在每一場籃球比賽開場的勉強笑容與握手。

I arrived in Chapel Hill in August 2002 to study at the joint Peace Center at Duke University and UNC, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - and if you know a little bit about the two schools you would be surprised about the word "joint" in this sentence - cooperation between the universities has until then been mainly limited to grim smiles and a forced handshake at the beginning of each basketball game.

For this Peace Program, however, the cooperation is not only working, but it is an incredible added value for everybody lucky enough to be admitted to this Centre.

Usually, half of the Peace Fellows are enrolled at Duke University's Program in International Development Policy and the other half in a master program of their choice at UNC. The Rotary program each semester offers a class especially for the Peace Fellows. The classes focus on different issues such as negotiation skills, development policy, democratic governance and conflict management.  In addition to the courses, fellows meet every month at the Rotary seminars, where practitioners and policy makers from different organizations share their experiences and stimulate discussions among the students.

扶輪選擇這些大學取決於他們在和平與解決衝突的優秀程度和實力，因此在該整年度所發生許多的事件都值得參訪並提供了吸引人的觀點和新的見識。

Rotary selected these universities due to their excellence and strength in peace and conflict resolution, therefore there are many events taking place throughout the year that are worth visiting and that offer fascinating perspectives and new insights.

Personally, I studied at UNC's school of Education with the opportunity to take half of my classes in development policy at Duke University, and in the political science, anthropology and Russian linguistics department.

夏天三個月的實習也是扶輪計畫的一部分。我的實習計畫是到亞塞拜然，為聯合國發展計畫工作－接下來的幾分鐘我將會提到一些在那裡的事情。

Part of the Rotary program is also a 3 months summer internship. My internship program took me to Azerbaijan, where I worked for the United Nations Development Program - and I will tell you a little bit more about my stay there throughout the next minutes.

第二站：亞塞拜然—加入計畫一年

Stop 2: Azerbaijan - one year into the program

Imagine sitting in a jeep clearly marked "United Nations", you are traveling through a country called Azerbaijan, located in the Caucasus and until 1991 part of the Soviet Union. You are passing through areas where no grass, flower or tree will grow, where there is no sound of birds, bees or any living thing because they are a desert of oil, chemicals and steel. It is a grotesque and somehow morbid picture to drive by these areas, where everything just seems to be black, where dead trees are sad indicators of the once flouring landscape, where rusty oil rigs, pipelines, and. whole factory plants are remnants of the once blooming Soviet petrochemical industry. These are areas, where close by are some of the highest infant mortality, infertility and cancer rates in the world.

另一個四小時的行程，穿過難民營，內部住滿成千上萬在不人道的條件下生活的流亡人民。亞美尼亞－亞塞拜然的戰爭遍及Nagorno-Karabach地域，造成近百萬人民無家可歸，時至十三年後的今日；這些國家仍然沒有簽訂和平協議。

Another four hour ride, you are crossing a refugee camp, filled with hundreds and thousands of Internally Displaced People living under inhuman conditions. The Armenian-Azeri war over the region of  Nagorno-Karabach has left nearly a million people without a home, and even today, more than 13 years later; these countries still have not signed a peace agreement.

我的任務是做國家人類發展報告，它描述人類發展的現今狀況及尤其著重在這方面可能的新技術。自那時起, 政府、不同的機構和捐獻者代理機構都採用這個報告來作為降低貧困及經濟發展策略的政策決定之依據。

My task was to work on the National Human Development Report, which described the current situation of human development and especially focused on the potential of new technologies in this regard. Since then this report has been used by the government, different organizations and donor agencies to inform their policy decisions on poverty reduction and economic development strategies.

亞塞拜然，在我目前工作的許多國家也發生同樣的情形，由於它的政府和領導者過於忙著和外國石油公司交涉生意，整個國家正陷入衰退狀態。我看見一個被貪污腐化控制的國家，它的開發署和機構，鎮日忙著增加自己的資產和彼此惡性競爭而失去了他們工作的焦點－這個國家的人民。

Azerbaijan, and I see the same happening in many countries I currently work in, is falling into decay because its government and leaders are too busy making business with the foreign oil companies. I saw what happens to a country that is dominated by corruption, where developing agencies and organization, in their strive to enhance their own assets and to compete with each other have lost the focus of their work - the people in the country.

你們都很了解，當人們沒有適當的法律、民主習俗和社會制度來保護他們，將會受到怎麼樣的痛苦。

Many of you know well, how people suffer when they do not have appropriate laws, democratic institutions and social systems to protect them.

One of the core courses for Peace Fellows at the Duke-UNC Peace Center is in conflict management and negotiation, and while the role-plays were very interesting and a lot of fun, I initially felt the topics (mostly focusing on ethnic or inter-state conflicts) were very abstract.  While working at the UN, we organized special workshops on alternative conflict resolution techniques, and tried to enhance the role of women in negotiating peace agreements in post-conflict societies. It was fascinating for me to see how they brought together Armenians and Azeris to constructively discuss possible paths to bring the countries and its people closer together.  My training at the peace center not only gave me the chance to give input to this, but I actually ended up training some of the UN staff on negotiation techniques.

And still today, there is hardly a week when I do not think back to the skills I acquired in this class and make use of them, both, in my private and in my professional life. The class allowed me to systematically approach an issue and to step back and imagine being in the shoes of another person or group of persons - this is often more difficult than it seems. But to be able to look outside the box and view an issue through the eyes and lenses of another person, is a key exercise to analyze underlying interest and alternatives.

Imagine flying back to Chapel Hill after this trip and you feel that you both, have gotten a lot and lost a lot. You know that you acquired a highly valuable experience, maturity, the chance to apply what you have learned theoretically, and you have met wonderful people. What you have lost is a lot of naivety and idealism about the political economy of development.  However, you feel pumped, vibrant and energetic, because this time, you know where you are going, and you know that there are people there at the Peace Center, that are looking forward to hearing your story.  You are excited to start into a new school year - feeling confident now that you can master it, having gained new insights on issues and content that you feel passionate about, and that you have the chance to consolidate this experience during the next semester.

你們覺得如釋重負，在和喝了十杯伏特加的聯合國督導結束無止盡的旅行之後－你們仍然活著。

Most of all, however, you feel relieved. Relieved and thankful that after endless trips with your UN supervisor, who thinks that driving is only fun after 10 glasses of vodka -you are still alive. ---

順便一提，到達巴庫(亞塞拜然的首府)時，我與當地扶輪社取得了聯繫並拜訪他們－我是如此地興奮得知亞塞拜然竟也有一個扶輪青年服務團－我曾在我的德國家鄉成立過扶輪青年服務團，我立即帶著該扶輪青年服務團一起共同設法翻新巴庫的二個孤兒院。

BTW - upon arriving in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, I got in touch with the local Rotary Club and visited them - and I was excited to learn that Azerbaijan also has a Rotaract Club - having founded the Rotaract Club in my German home town, I immediately brought the Clubs who worked together and we already managed to renovate two orphanages in Baku.

Stop 3: Graduation and Annual Rotary Peace Conference

最後的一年，你在學術表現上獲得一定程度的信心，你知道成功地圓滿完成了這個計畫，包括最後一學期總考的考試、扶輪最高課程和你的碩士論文。

Over the last year, you have acquired a certain level of confidence about your academic performance and you know that all that is left for your successful completion of the program is your last semester including comprehensive examinations, the Rotary capstone class and your Master thesis.

過了學期的三個星期，你們的信心徹底瓦解。你們工作到三更半夜，盤根錯節的論文一再地讓你們在找出解決方法還是一頭鑽進研究之間弄得進退兩難。你們所修課程中最費神的課程之一的扶輪最高課程結束－不僅是它自己的要求很多，而且事實上你們必須和你的獎學生中的一位同學確實地做好團隊合作。

Three weeks into the semester your confidence is entirely shattered. You are working well past midnight, the thesis turned into a maze and you constantly are tom between wanting to find the way out or in. The Rotary capstone ends up being one of the most demanding classes you have taken - not so much for the requirements themselves, but for the fact that you have to do real teamwork with one of your fellow scholars.

All our negotiation and conflict resolutions skills were again required, when my Indian colleague Pravin Dixit and I tried to pull ourselves through this paper on the "Role of media in social reconstruction in Iraq". Simple questions like which books to include, how to quote our sources, when to meet, and how to deal with deadlines, became often more in-surmountable, than the next mountain peak in the Himalaya. However, we made it! Not only did we finally produce a jointly written paper, but we also presented the outcomes of our research and our suggestions to the Iraqi Interim Government at the Annual Peace Conference in April 2004. This annual Peace Conference is one of the various events and initiatives to integrate the Peace Center with the Rotarian Community in District 7710, which is a continuous but rewarding effort for both sides. Rotarians in this district volunteer to be the host councilor for one of the Peace Fellows and I have been very lucky, that, Past District Governor Vernon Harris happened to choose me as his fellow. He and his family became very good friends and we still meet every couple of weeks.

For this stage, however, I was relieved when all the degree requirements were finally fulfilled and I received my Master degree title, "summa cum laude" from the head of the education program at UNC.

I think, it is quite easy for you to imagine how happy and proud I felt - at the same time, there was this little hint of sadness - knowing that the wonderful time I had at the Peace Center would be over and that many of my friends would go back to their countries, be it Azerbaijan, Jordan, Japan or India.

當完成和平計畫的基本階段結束時，這個旅程並不會結束。

While this fundamental stage of completing the Peace Program was over, this Journey is far from being over ..

第四站：國際RTI (Research Triangle Institute, North Carolina, USA)

Stop 4: RTI International

在你完成兩年所有的工作之後你會覺得－想到當我們耗盡體力時，心中所夢想就只是假期、海灘、滑雪，而這些事情迄今為止在這次旅程裡並不是必需該做的事。不急慢慢地來、放輕鬆、享受那些不用花腦筋的書本或者只是與你們的朋友閒晃，而不必不停地看手錶和用〝抱歉，我有工作要做〞為自己找理由。

Imagine being entirely exhausted, just dreaming of vacation, beach, skiing, all of these things that this voyage has until now not necessarily been - and you feel that after all the work of the 2 years you have earned that. To take your time, relax, enjoy all those non-intellectual books or just hang around with your friends without constantly having to check your watch and to excuse yourself with "I am sorry - I have work to do".

就在準備前往德國的三天前最令人興奮的事來到，國際RTI確定雇用我 - 當時真是樂不可支。

Well, I was nearly there - the biggest excitement, though came when three days before leaving for Germany, RTI International confirmed my employment - I was thrilled.

So why RTI International?

I am sure each of you remembers at least 1-2 teachers or professors you had, people that left a huge impression on you.  Well, for me one of these people was a visiting professor at Duke University who teaches a class on "Development and Social Sector Reform". This professor opened a new world for me. In his class we discussed the ethics and morality, the underlying social frameworks and the political economy of development. He is a real practitioner, a person who does supports education reforms all around the world working for R TI International- and the more he talked about the challenges, the dilemmas, the difficulties and the frustration of this business, the more I realized that this is the exactly the kind of work I want to be doing. For me that was a turning point.

The Peace Center at Duke and UNC offers a unique opportunity for exactly this fusion of theorists and practitioners which allows us, as Peace Fellows to get a very holistic view on the topics we are dealing with. Because all of us Peace Fellows have different interests, such as international human rights, trade issues, peace education, constitution building and conflict management, the span of themes is huge. This allows us Fellows to open our minds and horizons to dive into issues that we otherwise would not be exposed to.

My daily work at RTI requires this breadth and both a sound theoretical foundation coupled with practical experience. RTI is an independent organization, which serves clients in government, industry, academia, and public service throughout the United States and abroad through active research and development programs in health, environment, advanced technology, economic and social development, and education and training. We have world wide a staff of about 2,500 people of which about 300 are working in the International Development Group. This group is divided into several major technical areas such as health, education, democratic governance, and information and communication technologies - we have also just recently founded a group working on Conflict Management and Reconstruction. As a member of this group - parallel to my work in education and technology - we are hoping to apply the expertise we have gained working on local governance issues in Iraq other post-conflict societies such as the Sudan. In Iraq, my colleagues from RTI have contributed to the foundation of hundreds of neighborhood councils and local governance structures, without which the past elections would probably not have been possible. A major initiative was to strengthen indigenous organizations and to support the development of an independent Iraqi media.

Due to my experience from the Rotary Capstone class, I was assigned to write the White Paper on "Media and Democracy" for the United States Agency of International Development in Baghdad, which provides recommendations and suggestions on issues such as media law, protection of journalists, media capacity building, and citizen participation.

Currently, I am also working on a major education reform project in Pakistan, where I have just come back from, on a global economic development initiative and will be leaving for Rwanda next month where I am involved in a health decentralization program.

I stand here today, thankful to Rotary and each of you who has contributed to this World Peace Fellowship. I am thankful for having been able to study at the Rotary Center for International Studies in Peace and Conflict resolution and that I had the opportunity to enrich myself not only academically and professionally, but most of all personally. The donation from the German Rotary Gemeindienst has made this possible for me and I understand and consider this a major responsibility.
